Mel was born in Atlanta on September 20, 1952 and graduated with his class of Columbia High School in June, 1970. Mel resided in Conyers when he passed away on Monday, May 16, 2011.
Mel is survived by his wife Deidra Weldon Mitchell; son, Shane Mitchell; his parents, beloved mother, Sara Mitchell of Lilburn and Mel and Sue Mitchell, Sr. of Newnan, GA; brothers and sisters, Mickey Mitchell, Brad and Debra Catron, Brian and Peggy Mitchell, Karen and Kevin Neill, Steve and Miranda Jenkins, Tommy Jenkins, Bert Jenkins, Joe and Deana Bishop; children, Josh and Jenny Weldon, Bret and Jessie Steger, Jeremiah and Jamie Millwood, and Jacob and Hope Manderson; 7 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Mel's life was held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 19 in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons in Decatur. The Rev. Sercey Jackson and Rev. John Reiley officiated.
In lieu of six Hooter’s girls, Honorary Pallbearers were Walter Couch, Kenny Tanner, Jim Bradley, Jerone Acuff, Todd Mitchell, John Lester, Richard Sisson, Scooter Shrive,r and Kevin Findley.
