Jimmy Bennett scores against SW DeKalb
Jimmy Bennett scores against SW DeKalb

Columbia High School was completed in 1966; we’re the 2nd class to graduate. Students were reassigned to Columbia from:

  • Southwest DeKalb
  • Avondale
  • Towers

Of course, there were also those insignificant Prefreshmen—8th Graders—who moved up from the nearby Elementary schools (Columbia, Toney, Wadsworth, Snapfinger, and others). (In those days, you were in elementary school from 1st through 7th grade; after that, you were in high school. Or the military…)

Things were changing almost as fast as we were. We wanted and rebelled against anchors while all the anchors were being hauled up. Or, so it seemed.

It Was The Best of Times

It was a time of happiness and joy. It was a time for music festivals you could afford. It was the time of Woodstock, Bob Dylan, Cream, The Yardbirds, Credence Clearwater, The Byrds, and many, many others. It was Haight-Ashbury, if you were going to San Francisco. The Braves came to Atlanta and the Falcons were born. The Chiefs appeared and we started playing soccer for our school. In winter. In shorts. It was Bobby Dodd and Vince Dooley in our state. And Shug Jordan and what’s-his-name over in Alabama. It was the last we’d see gasoline at 19¢ per gallon, that’s for certain.

1969 Pep Rally
1969 Pep Rally

Columbia High School graduated a lot of us back in 1970. Sad to say, the number for whom we have contact information is rather small in comparison.

We’re Hoping To Find You!

No matter where you’re located, we’re part of a community, and a rare one at that. We’re among the first who trod the halls of a brand-new school! We set traditions along with those immediately ahead of us and those who followed, and who continue to follow.

How Many Years?

How many years? It cannot be! 38 summers, autumns, winters, and springs have passed since our class graduated Columbia High School? Well…it’s true. Tonight, October 23rd, several of us “gathered” together across the miles in a teleconference to start discussions about our upcoming 40-year Reunion.
